How did I get started in beef farming?
In the late 70's an old dairy farm neighboring my own property was being sold, the interested party wanted to put a junk yard on the property. That hit me hard as someone who really appreciated the beautiful scenery in this valley and the town. My wife, Janie and I decided we should purchase this property and save it from becoming a junk yard eye sore. During this time a long time friend of mine who raised angus had told me how great they were at eating burdocks and talked me into buying a few from him to start a herd and take care of my burdock issue I was taking on with the old dairy farm property. The rest is history as they say.
My friend had steered me right, and yet on false premises. Of course the angus cattle were not keen on eating the burdocks, however they did graze the pastures and while grazing, fertilized the pasture. In turn with pasture management the fields were improved, less burdocks. I have also been grateful for starting off with Angus the "Business Breed" because of the decades of marketing done by the association and the collection of data by the breeders. Because of this angus are head and shoulders above other breeds on meat quality, growth, fertility and function.
Throughout the years we have seen farming become more difficult, from taxes to technology nothing is easy. We choose to continue farming to help improve the genetics of cattle and to be a part of sustainability through youth education. Opening our farm to educational events, tours and opportunities for youth is very important to us.
Who manages the farm?
Jeanetta is the farm manager. She and her husband Kevin and two kids
work on the farm with the cattle. Cleaning, feeding, selecting genetics,
showing cattle and working with youth. They are growing their own farm

What educational opportunities are there at New Penn Farm?
At New Penn Farm we are happy to work with new producers as well as
those who are continuing to work towards improving their current beef
operations. We have hosted many different types of events including; NY State Angus Sale, youth cattle shows, youth cattle show seminars/working clinics, our annual fall tag sale, BQA certification seminars, 4-H club meetings, youth show animal leasing opportunities and farm tours. Do you have a sale?
The first Saturday in October we have our annual Tag Sale and Open House 11 am - 1 pm.
How does a tag sale work?
Animals will be viewable and sale prices will be posted prior to the tag sale. Animals are sold on a first come first serve basis the day of the sale 11 am - 1 pm. Animals that are sold will be loaded at that time or transportation arranged.
Why a tag sale?
Tag sales give you time to view the animals and find the best option for your herd without the pressure live auctions can at times give. For us it decreases the cost of selling the animals by not having to pay commission to the auction company and we can help answer questions directly to buyers throughout the process so the animal best suited to the buyers farm can be selected. This leads to happier customers that select animals that work better for their operations years into the future. This lets us pass on that savings to our buyers while cultivating a low stress environment. We hope everyone has a chance to come out and view our cattle offering the first Saturday in October.
